Painting eggs

In Țara Dornelor, the craft of painting eggs has been practised for more than 100 years, and it is closely connected to the embroidery art from the traditional Romanian folk costumes, being a valuable treasure of Bucovina traditional culture. In the well-known museum village, namely Ciocănești, over 30 women paint eggs throughout the year. You can visit their houses to learn the secrets of this art, and the painted egg that you will create will weight as the best soul memory for you.

You also take part in an egg laying lesson in a workshop organized in Ciocănești. The commune of the museum attests that the folk tradition plays an essential role for residents, children and adults alike, with increasing interest from tourists. At this moment, only in Ciocănești there are more than 30 permanent cutters and a dedicated event – the Painted Egss National Festival, which enjoys the participation of popular craftsmen from all over the country every year.

Sewing

The sewing circle/ gathering is still present in Vatra Dornei!

Traditional crafters from different activity fields, get together in Vatra Dornei to pass the traditions further while listening to stories. As a tourist or local citizen, you can also join a sewing gathering and learn how to sew traditional Romanian blouses for men and women, traditional vests and towels. One can also discover the secrets of crafting belts for men, bead jewellery and also weaving and knitting different objects.

Every Saturday, except for holidays, you can meet beautiful people to storytelling, starting from noon, at the Ethnographic Museum in the centre of the town.

Wood sculpturing/carving

Discover the success story of a local wood sculptor, who has inspired many young generations to love wood carving, along his 50 years of activity. You have the opportunity to meet him in a wood sculpturing workshop where he will show you how wood can come to life. For a beautiful experience, you may also be guided to the Hall of Culture from Dorna Arini, where the well-known artist has displayed the ethnographic collection “The forest, cradle of civilization of Dorna “razesi people”.

If you want to visually and spiritually revive the childhood memories, in your grandparents’ house you may start with a visit to the museums in Tara Dornelor.

The ancient objects and house tools, which furnish a room to provide a cosy and familiar atmosphere, will guide you in a journey to discover the simplicity and beauty of the village house.

Closer to nature, you can enjoy the rich fauna and flora of the area which is revealed to you in a fascinating frame at the Natural Science and Hunting Museum.
